Msimango explains why it was important for Chiefs to win unofficial Cups

Kaizer Chiefs have had a mixed start to the 2024/25 Premier Soccer League campaign across all competitions.

They missed out on the annual MTN8 after finishing 10th in the 2023/24 PSL campaign. In the Carling Knockout, they were eliminated in the quarter-finals by eventual finalists Mamelodi Sundowns.

In the league, the Glamour Boys have managed to win three games, registered two losses and a draw.

However, the club has managed to win two unofficial trophies; they started by winning the inaugural Cufa Cup in Bloemfontein in October after defeating Marumo Gallants in the final. Amakhosi followed it up with another Home of Legends Cup following victory over Golden Arrows and Mamelodi Sundowns respectively.

Defender Gavin Msimango believes it was important for Nasreddine Nabi's side, “those two cups that we’ve played, that we’ve won, brings about fresh of confidence within the guys, you know, especially the guys that are not playing as regularly as the others,” the 27-year-old told the media.

“It gives them that boost to say you know what we are still here to show the coach that we also deserve to be picked. And I think from those cups we draw a lot of confidence from them because it is against professional teams that are there to compete as well. I feel like, you know, our performances there, really are helping us a lot to see where we are as professionals.

“You know, the game time that we didn’t get in the league phase and we’re getting in those Cup games really helps a lot. And I’m sure maybe you may see a lot of rotations from the coach, giving players who did well in the cup, you know in the league game,” Msimango continued.

“Everyone will see for themselves that the quality within the team is still there.”

On Saturday, Chiefs host Royal AM at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in the Premier Soccer League assignment.
