No PSL return for Mokwena soon! ‘Maybe at the end of my career’

South African tactician Rulani Mokwena is satisfied with what he is currently doing with Wydad Athletic Club but insists he is not yet there.

The 38-year-old took over as the Red Castle's head coach at the start of the season, after parting ways with Mamelodi Sundowns. In his two campaigns with Masandawana, the vocal Mokwena won two Premier Soccer League titles and the African Football League. He also helped the club to back-to-back semi-final appearances in the Caf Champions League.

This is the first time he is coaching outside Mzansi, and he is already happy with the experience.

Mokwena insists he is not ready to return to South Africa now, and that he wants to continue coaching overseas.

“Inshallah, hopefully there are more opportunities abroad. As much as I miss South Africa, and I love the South African people, of course, and I think maybe towards the end of my career I can go back to South Africa,” he told the Caf media team.

“I think now is about spending some time here, learning, challenging myself and improving. But also then trying to stretch myself into bigger clubs, more challenging scenarios and learning from many other coaches and many other cultures.”

I'm falling more and more in love with Wydad AC

Last season, Wydad finished sixth in the Botola Pro League which locked them out of Caf competitions. Mokwena is happy with the ambition at the club and he insists he is already settled.

“Of course this club represents that, it’s a great opportunity. There have been some great coaches that have coached Wydad.

“It’s only a privilege to represent the people of the winners. Wydad is a very special club and I’m falling more and more in love with this club every single day. Yesterday we had our fans at the training session and I can tell you I was close to tears when they came to support us.”
