Champions Orlando Pirates deliver against Cadiz

Orlando Pirates recovered from a goal down to beat Cadiz 2-1 in a pre-season outing played on Saturday evening.

The Premier Soccer League champions were playing their second game in preparation for the new campaign starting in August. The initial fixture between Bucs and Cordoba ended 1-1.

Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, as expected, tinkered with his squad to give all his players a chance to prove their worth.

The Soweto giants took time to settle, and they ended up paying the price after just three minutes. Ibon Sánchez fully capitalised on the situation to find the back of the net to give Cadiz an early lead.

In the 11th minute, the teams were level on terms thanks to Bafana Bafana international Tshepang Moremi. The winger cut inside from the left before unleashing a rocket past the goalkeeper, who remained glued to his spot.

With a minute to the break, the Sea Robbers got their second goal through Daniel Msendami, who swept home after a good run from his teammate to ensure they went to the break leading 2-1.

The goalless second-half

After the pause, as expected, both teams made changes to their squads to give other players a chance. Evidence Makgopa failed to take a huge opportunity to get his name on the scoresheet, while Siyabonga Dladla pulled off a fantastic save later on.

Despite numerous chances created, no more goals were scored, but it was Pirates who managed to get a deserved 2-1 win.

The next outing will be on Tuesday against Saudi outfit Al Ittihad followed by Spanish side Las Palmas a day later. Their final pre-season friendly game will be with Neom SC.

Ahead of the new season, Bucs have signed Mthetheleli Mthiyane (Stellenbosch FC), Sbangani Zulu (Richards Bay), Bohale Ngwato (Siwelele) Ghampani Lungu (Siwelele), Neo Rapoo (Siwelele), Aphiwe Baliti (Siwelele) and Matome Mmolai (Leicesterford City).
