Orlando Pirates will have to pay for the fans' trouble in the Carling Knockout's Round of 16 game against Magesi FC, PSL has confirmed.
The Buccaneers hosted Premier Soccer League's newbies at the Orlando Stadium in the initial stage of the annual competition. In the first half, Magesi shocked the hosts by putting three past them without reply. They eventually won the game 3-2 to advance.
The supporters were not content with the officials for what they felt was poor officiating and ended up aiming objects at them.
The PSL has now charged the Soweto Giants for their fans' misconduct with a warning of dire consequences if the same happens again in a year.
How much will Pirates pay for fans' troubles?
“I can confirm that earlier this morning, Orlando Pirates Football Club appeared before the PSL DC to answer to charges of spectator misbehaviour arising from a missile-throw incident wherein the spectators threw an assortment of missiles directed at the match officials in their match against Magesi FC,” the PSL Prosecutor Zola Majavu confirmed.
“Orlando Pirates FC pleaded guilty as charged and they were subsequently convicted accordingly. Having listened to the submission regarding aggravation and mitigation of sanction and mindful of the fact that they pleaded guilty and as first offenders, the PSL ruled as follows:
“They were fined a monetary amount of R100.000 of which half is suspended for 12 months on conditions that during the period of suspension, they are not found guilty of the same offence. If they were to re-offend the suspended portion would become immediately effective as well as an additional sanction for the new offence.
“They were further ordered to carry the costs of the DC proceedings, which are usually administratively computed and added to the R50.000 fine, which is effective immediately,” he concluded.
