Ex-Chiefs star misses Morocco move after checking into rehab over Marijuana issue

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Kgaogelo Sekgota has missed out on a lucrative move to a North African club after getting booked into a rehabilitation centre.

Sekgota, who left Chiefs in 2023, before joining Stellenbosch FC for one year and then Magesi last season had reportedly attracted interest from a Moroccan club but his admission into a rehabilitation centre has messed up the move.

The Seshego-born winger has been admitted at the Hope of Achievers Rehabilitation Centre in Limpopo alongside two other players Lerato Chabangu and Yamkela Phalane following a request by his family, as per Soccer Laduma.

“Firstly, let me give acknowledgement to NKRL foundation that does the work of recognising the soccer players who are in need of help. Our passion is to help these guys so that they can regain their dignity on and off the field. While on that, let me stress this point, Kgaogelo was not using drugs. He is only using Marijuana which is easy to rehabilitate,” Watson Luandi, CEO of the rehabilitation centre, told Soccer Laduma.

Sekgota had attracted interest from Morocco

“My job is to help them find themselves and rewriting their story. So, it’s up to the patient after they finish the program if they are willing to go back to soccer. As the centre we can’t decide for them, but so far Sekgota, as well as the other players who are here, are doing very well and they will be ready to be reintegrated to society soon.”

Luandi says Sekgota’s family is hoping that the player can recover quickly so that he can revive his football career.

“There is a team that he is contracted to presently, so I think they are the best to answer that question, but we believe that there is a club in Morocco that has previously shown interest in the player and that's why the family wants him to get his life back as he is still young,” he added.

Sekgota made eight appearances for Magesi last season with his last match being against TS Galaxy in January this year.
