Pirates send title warning to Sundowns and Chiefs with ninth signing

Orlando Pirates have officially announced the signing of midfielder Thapelo Mokobodi from Stellenbosch FC, finalising the move just days before the start of the new season.

The 23-year-old has signed a three-year contract with the Soweto giants and will don the number 33 shirt for the upcoming campaign.

“I am pleased to be here and look forward to meeting the rest of the team,” Mokobodi stated. “It’s a big opportunity to play for such a club, and I am ready to get going. I would like to make a meaningful contribution to this great institution.”

Speculation surrounding the defensive midfielder’s transfer had been circulating for some time before Wednesday’s confirmation.

Stellenbosch laud departing midfielder

Mokobodi began his professional career in the 2023/24 season with Marumo Gallants in the second tier before securing a move to Stellenbosch last season. During his time with the Cape side, he featured in 28 matches, including 13 starts and six appearances in the CAF Confederation Cup.

“Mokobodi joined Stellenbosch FC in August 2025 and made 28 appearances across all competitions during his solitary season with the Club,” Stellenbosch said in a statement confirming the midfielder’s departure.

“Capable of playing across multiple positions, the 23-year-old proved himself to be a versatile member of the squad and used those qualities to help the Maroons reach the 2025 MTN8 final.

“We thank Thapelo for his service to the club and wish him all the best in the next chapter of his career,” Stellies further stated.

Pirates getting an experienced player

Across his career, Mokobodi has accumulated 73 appearances. Both of his professional goals were scored for Gallants in the Motsepe Foundation Championship during separate fixtures against Black Leopards.

The Buccaneers will kick off their Betway Premiership title defence this Saturday when they host newly promoted Milford FC.

Mokobodi is the ninth signing for Pirates after the arrivals of Mthetheleli Mthiyane (Stellenbosch FC), Sbangani Zulu (Richards Bay), Bohale Ngwato (Siwelele) Ghampani Lungu (Siwelele), Neo Rapoo (Siwelele), Aphiwe Baliti (Siwelele) & Matome Mmolai (Leicesterford City) and Norwegian striker Sebastian Pedersen from Sogndal Fotball.
