Orlando Pirates announce passing of title-winning coach

Premier Soccer League champions Orlando Pirates have confirmed the passing of their ex-tactician Roy Barreto.

The 72-year-old lost the fight in Portugal, as confirmed on Wednesday morning, after battling illness. The Sea Robbers have released a statement regarding the incident that robbed the beautiful game of an experienced coach.

“Orlando Pirates is saddened by the passing of our former Coach, Roy Barreto,” the Soweto giants posted on their X account.

“His contribution to the history and success of the club will forever be remembered. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire football fraternity during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace.”

Baretto’s Pirates legacy

The late tactician was born in Malawi but shaped his footballing skills in Zimbabwe where his coaching begun. Barreto was also part of the Reinhard Fabisch technical team, for the Warriors, in 1994.

He eventually left for Namibia for a short stint and later in Mzansi where he inspired Orlando Pirates to the 2002/03 championship. Prior to taking the Pirates’ challenge, Barreto coached Free State Stars where he showed massive technical understanding which attracted the Sweto giants.

By the time of his passing, the 72-year-old was living in Portugal with his wife Fazi Barreto who also confirmed the coach died on Monday morning. He leaves behind two daughters as well.

The football fraternity has been hit, given the positive impact Barreto had on the beautiful game, both on and off the pitch.
