Mosimane urged to consider Sebelebele

Retired football legend Vuyo Mere has named Mamelodi Sundowns’ attacking duo Cassius Mailula and Tashreeq Matthews as well as Orlando Pirates defender Kamogelo Sebelebele as players who have raised their hands to be selected in the Bafana Bafana squad.

Sebelebele has been instrumental in Pirates’ defence, especially in the MTN8, where they have conceded just one goal in the campaign and has also scored one goal. The trio have also been named in coach Pitso Mosimane’s preliminary squad for the upcoming 2027 AFCON qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea later this month.

“What a way to start your selection of the team by having a pool of players in the MTN8 final,” Mere told iDiski Times.

“This is where most of the players are selected from now because if you look at the World Cup squad, we had many players from Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates. Hence, I was a bit disappointed by the Kaizer Chiefs players not making it all the way to the semi-finals of MTN8 because it was going to help the pool of players for coach Pitso Mosimane to select from.

“Obviously, coach Pitso, he’ll be under pressure because there’s qualifiers around the corner, but for him, the positive side is that he knows the players. He’s worked with most of the players before. Hopefully, he will be able to select a quality squad for the upcoming qualifiers, and I know there are other teams that are doing well.

“I mean, players are raising their hands even at the other teams. It’s good to see that. I mean, I’ve been impressed with Sebelebele. I’ve been impressed with Mailula and Tashreeq Matthews at Sundowns. You know, those players, they are raising their hands. It seems like they know that coach Pitso is looking for players.”

Pirates were unhappy with me training in America

Venda Football Club left-back Cameron Carnell has revealed that his former development side Pele Pele, belonging to Orlando Pirates were upset with him after he left to go train in the US.

His journey saw him feature for Mpumalanga Black Aces, Bidvest Wits, Sekhukhune United among South African sides, while it tracks back to ABC Motsepe side Pele Pele.  

“They [Pirates] actually wanted to bring me up, but I decided to go and train in America with my uncle’s team. And when I came back from that, Pirates were not happy about that."

Carnell explained that he did well at Pele Pele and the side wanted to promote him, and the challenge came when he opted to go to America instead of staying.

“I obviously started playing when I was three years old at a local club in Johannesburg called Sporting,” Carnell told iDiski Times.

“And from there moved on to different local clubs, and then I went to Black Aces for about two years. From Black Aces, I went to Bidvest Wits and was there for obviously a few years, trained with the first team, and then they got sold.

“After that, I went off to Maritzburg United for another season and a half, and after that, that’s kind of where, like, a stop happened in my career, where I went back to play in, the [ABC] Motsepe League at Pele Pele FC, Pirates’ second team. I did well there.

“They actually wanted to bring me up, but I decided to go and train in America with my uncle’s team. And when I came back from that, Pirates were not happy about that. But anyway, I left there and went to Sekhukhune in their second team also in the ABC League and then played there for I think four months.

“And then they promoted me to the first team, and I was there for a decent season; I didn’t play much there, but yeah, it’s football. Now I’m at a club where I’m looking forward to getting game-time and the minutes and everything else to be able to further my career upon this as well.”
