No debate about Chaine

Former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo believes there shouldn’t be a debate about the Betway Premiership Goalkeeper of the Season award.

The nominees for the Goalkeeper of the Season award are Orlando Pirates’ Sipho Chaine, Mamelodi Sundowns’ Ricardo Goss (formerly of Siwelele FC), and Kaizer Chiefs’ Brandon Petersen.

Mhlongo believes Chaine deserves the award because of his consistent individual performances throughout the season, as well as his contribution to Pirates’ achievements.

“Sipho Chaine…he’s done tremendously well for the club, surpassing Moneeb Josephs’ record of clean-sheets at the club,” said Mhlongo.

“He won the treble as well, consistently performing at the highest level and being rewarded with Bafana Bafana call-up at the World Cup.

“It goes without saying, he won the Goalkeeper of the Season in the 2024/25 season. There were questions why, because Sundowns won the league.

“But I think he doubled up, he did himself a huge favour by just performing the way he did. I don’t even know why I’m explaining this because sometimes it’s received otherwise.

“But look at the numbers, performances and the achievements of the team and as an individual. Sipho Chaine is the Goalkeeper of the Season, my opinion.”

Pirates lauded following their business in transfer window

Former Orlando Pirates winger Innocent Chikoya has been impressed with how the Buccaneers have been moving in the transfer window.

After winning three trophies last season, Pirates have signed a number of players, which Chikoya claims are all proven players.

“I always say, man, if you’re playing for a big team, especially Pirates, you don’t have anything to defend, because the previous season is gone. You still need to achieve again in the following season,” he told Soccer Laduma.

Right now, we’ve got pressure because Mamelodi Sundowns have got two stars above their badge. It’s telling us that we need to put another star on our shirt as well. Yes, we must defend all our trophies and do even more than that, so that we do better than last season. We need to add the one that we didn’t take last season, and that’s the star itself.

Chikoya then advised the new players to follow the club’s blueprint which they have found.

“I think they’ve seen the blueprint.  Coming to Pirates, you’ve seen the blueprint of the team. You just need to come there level-headed, put your heart in it, work hard and everything will follow.  Pirates is a huge brand and if you do the right things at the club,  you’ll become one of the best players. Look at what Relebohile (Mofokeng) has achieved at only 21.

“He has won almost all the trophies in South Africa. From DDC, he knew the pressure and he has become accustomed to the pressure of the club.  You never heard anything negative about that young boy. I’ll give you another example, even Mohau (Nkota) and Mbekezeli Mbokazi, no noise. Play your football and work as hard as you can. The sky is the limit, not for Sundowns but for Pirates,” Chikoya concluded.
