Pirates opponents appoint a new coach

Orlando Pirates’ next opponents in the CAF Champions League, African Stars, have confirmed the appointment of a new head coach to replace Ronnie Kananelo.

After the international break, Pirates are set to face Namibian side African Stars in the second preliminary round of the Champions League.

Earlier this month, African Stars secured a spot in the next round after a 3-3 aggregate score against Gabonese side AS Mangasport, but they advanced thanks to the away-goal rule.

However, soon after progressing past the first preliminary round, then-coach Kananelo was appointed by Marumo Gallants to replace Phuti Mohafe.

Kananelo left African Stars with immediate effect, with reports from Namibia indicating that the decision to leave the club with an important Champions League second-round fixture ahead left a bit of a sour taste at the club.

In fact, there were reports that the management of African Stars would consider their legal options regarding the matter.

Nevertheless, African Stars will be under new leadership when they face Pirates in a two-legged clash in October.

The Namibian champions have announced former Namibia U20 coach Gerald Güther as Kananelo’s replacement at the helm.

Pirates & Co. advised how to reach Downs’ level

Mamelodi Sundowns legend Roger Feutmba says it requires money and proper planning for other clubs to reach the level the African champions are at right now.

Sundowns has now become a sort of global team after competing in international tournaments like the FIFA Club World Cup and FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

“Sundowns is bringing South African football to the big stage; their players are exposed to international football, which will obviously benefit the national team,” Feutmba tells KickOff.

“In the whole world today you can’t talk about African football without mentioning Mamelodi Sundowns. Of course, to reach the stage of being a global team or brand, you need money.

“But sometimes you can have money but lack a vision. Because money without vision cannot help you. You can have a vision, but without money it won’t work, and you can have money, but without proper vision it won’t work.

“For your vision to work, you need to back it with money. And that’s exactly what Mamelodi Sundowns are doing. I’m not talking player transfers here,” he concluded.
