Facing Pirates, a major event?

The newly appointed African Stars coach, Gerald Guther, has already described their upcoming clash against Orlando Pirates as a major event.

Guther was announced as the new African Stars head coach this week, replacing Ronnie Kananelo, who recently left the club to take over at Marumo Gallants.

Kananelo’s departure came after the Namibian side advanced from the first preliminary round of the CAF Champions League, progressing past Gabonese outfit AS Mangasport.

A huge task awaits Güther, though, as one of his first assignments will be taking on current South African champions Pirates in a two-legged clash in October.

Güther has not hidden the fact that Pirates could be a mammoth task for his side, labelling the fixture as a “major event”.

Güther told African Stars media: “The CAF fixture is the major event on the current calendar, and definitely, we are working towards ensuring that we are capable of properly competing and not just participating.”

Notably, African Stars have never progressed beyond the first preliminary round of the Champions League, while they have also previously faced Pirates in the competition.

In the 2018/19 season, Pirates knocked African Stars out in the first round after a 1-0 aggregate win.

Pirates product unveiled in the US

Lyle Foster has been unveiled by MLS side Houston Dynamo after completing his loan from Burnley. The Bafana Bafana striker will wear the number shirt The Orange.
