La Cure Waves anticipating a tough outing

La Cure Waves coach Jerome Thomas knows what’s coming – a wounded Orlando Pirates side with a point to prove.

After holding the Buccaneers to a shock 0-0 draw in Mauritius last week, Thomas admits Pirates will come out firing at Orlando Stadium in the second leg.

The La Cure Waves coach, Thomas, even admitted after the game that many expected his team to be battered by the Buccaneers.

Thomas has now revealed that he is alert to what to expect in Soweto this weekend in the second leg following last week’s result.

“First, we need to assess the players’ condition and focus on recovery before our scheduled departure for South Africa on Wednesday,” he said, according to Le Défi Sport.

“That said, I know it will be a very tough match. Orlando Pirates have had their pride wounded and will come out looking to hurt us in front of their home crowd. As for us, we need to keep possession well when we have the ball and be clinical in front of goal.”

He added: “It’s football, and anything can happen. We realize it will be extremely difficult. We are up against an African giant playing on home turf, in a stadium that holds thousands of fans.”

Pirates sign a goalkeeper

Orlando Pirates have reinforced their DDC side with the signing of a highly rated South African youth international ahead of the new DDC season.

Pirates have signed highly-rated teenage goalkeeper Kgoleng Ratisani from Sekhukhune United.

The 2006-born gloveman, who originally developed through the academy ranks at SuperSport United, arrives at Mayfair carrying substantial international credentials.

Ratisani was a prominent member of the South African Under-20 national team that enjoyed continental success by clinching the COSAFA U20 Championship, lifting the U20 AFCON title, and sealing an authoritative spot at the FIFA U20 World Cup. The move was confirmed by the player’s representatives, Prosport International.

Ouaddou defended after decision to play youngsters in CAF CL

A former Orlando Pirates coach has defended Abdeslam Ouaddou for throwing in youngsters in a crucial match, the first leg of the CAF Champions League first preliminary round this past weekend.

“I don’t think Pirates undermined their opponents. According to my experience, if a player is 19 years old and plays in the PSL, he should be ready to play internationally,” maintains ‘Njenje’, in conversation with KickOff.

“How else is the player going to gain experience? We have this wrong perception that a 19-year-old and a 20-year-old are still young players. I don’t think the Pirates coach undermined the team from Mauritius.

“The 0-0 result, there is nothing wrong with it because they managed not to concede away. In the second leg, Pirates will definitely score.

“Sometimes people undermine a country when its football is semi-professional or amateur. In the Champions League, you can’t undermine anybody. I remember when I coached Pirates, there was a time I had to take the team to Seychelles. Their league was also amateur. We won 2-0.

“I guarantee you, you will see a completely different scoreline in the second leg in Orlando. The coach knows what he is doing by playing the youngster; he is building his confidence,” Palacios concluded.
