Orlando Pirates transfers: Soweto giants sign New Zealand star

Orlando Pirates have reportedly finalised the signing of highly-rated goalkeeper Dublin Boon from Stellenbosch FC, according to multiple local sources.

The deal is pending an official announcement from the club. The 21-year-old shot-stopper is believed to have agreed to a permanent move to the Soweto giants who have handed him a three-year deal. This development follows the collapse of an earlier player-swap deal between the two clubs.

The Buccaneers had initially attempted to sign Boon as part of a package that would have seen Kabelo Dlamini and Faiz Abrahams move to Stellenbosch. However, the proposed transfer fell apart when Dlamini declined the move to the Cape Winelands.

Who is Pirates’ new signing?

Undeterred, the Sea Robbers returned with a new offer for the goalkeeper, and reports now suggest that an agreement has been reached.

Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, in December 2004, Boon started his youth career at Roda JC Kerkrade in the Netherlands before a stint with Wellington Phoenix. He joined Stellenbosch FC on a free transfer in August 2025.

While at Stellenbosch, Boon primarily served as a backup and featured in the DStv Diski Challenge, gaining limited senior team experience. Despite this, he is widely regarded as a player with significant potential for the future.

Long-term goalkeeping investment

His arrival at Orlando Pirates would bolster their goalkeeping ranks with another young talent. Sipho Chaine is expected to remain the club’s number one, with Siyabonga Dladla and Ethan Visagie also providing competition. The signing follows the departure of Melusi Buthelezi, who recently joined Sekhukhune United.

Should the transfer be officially confirmed, Boon will be the latest young prospect to join the Pirates squad as they continue their strategy of investing in emerging talent.
