Mamelodi Sundowns to make R9 million profit from sale of Bafana star

Mamelodi Sundowns are set to make a significant profit from the sale of winger Thapelo Maseko to Danish giants FC Copenhagen.

According to SABC Sport, Maseko is set to sign a three-year deal in Copenhagen after the club reached an agreement with Sundowns for his transfer, which will see the CAF Champions League holders pocket €1.5 million (R28 million).

It brings to an end a difficult chapter for Maseko, who has been determined to leave Sundowns after falling down the pecking order at the club.

Return on investment for Sundowns

Maseko joined the Brazilians in 2023 from SuperSport United (now Siwelele FC) for a reported R19 million after a deal to Belgian side KVC Westerlo collapsed. It means Sundowns will make a profit of R9 million from his sale, three years after his high-profile move from their Tshwane rivals.

When he joined Sundowns, Maseko initially hit the ground running under then coach Rulani Mokwena but quickly found opportunities limited under Manqoba Mngqithi and current boss Miguel Cardoso.

That saw him request a move away in January 2026, securing a loan to Cyprus, where he signed a six-month deal with AEL Limassol.

Maseko gets the move he desired

After impressing, Maseko earned a place in the Bafana Bafana squad for the 2026 and had a good outing, scoring the goal that delivered Hugo Broos’ side to the knockout round, for the first time in their history.

However, upon his return, it was clear that he was not in the plans for Cardoso and trained alone as the rest of the squad went to Austria for pre-season. He made it clear that he was seeking a move abroad and he has now secured a deal with the Danish side.
