Orlando Pirates trio attract interest from abroad

Orlando Pirates could have a battle on their hands to keep hold of three talented young players on their books at the end of the season.

Pirates lost another highly rated youngster when Mohau Nkota moved to Saudi Arabia Pro League club Al-Ettifaq at the end of last season but Relebohile Mofokeng stayed despite several reports linking him with a move abroad.

However, the interest in Mofokeng has not died down and he is not alone in the Pirates players being looked at by clubs overseas.

According to SoccerBeat’s Peter du Toit, enquiries have been made from clubs and agents overseas on Mofokeng, as well as his team-mates Oswin Appollis and Mbekezeli Mbokazi.

Who is interested in the Orlando Pirates trio?

“I get lots of contacts from overseas journalists and agents asking me what Mofokeng is really like, what Mbokazi and Appollis are really like,” he said.

“There is interest and I can tell you all three players if they are in the AFCON squad, which I am sure will be, will be closely watched by overseas teams and don’t be surprised if offers come to Pirates.

“That is not to say that they [Pirates] will say yes to them. Obviously, they turned down offers for Mofokeng. I can tell you now, the talk about Appollis is huge.”

Of the three, Mofokeng’s interest is well documented as he has been a subject of interest since his first season in the PSL in the 2023-24 campaign while Mbokazi has emerged as the next big thing in recent months.

The young 19-year-old centre-back has impressed at the heart of Pirates and Bafana Bafana defence, earning plenty of praise, and coach Hugo Broos has already advised him to move abroad next year.

For Appollis, it is new as he just signed for Pirates from Polokwane City in the off-season and it remains to be seen which clubs have sounded him out after starting life at Pirates in great fashion.

The 24-year-old Cape Town-born winger has three goals and four assists in 16 games for the Buccaneers so far this season.
