Durban City’s league campaign has been a slower build under new coach Khalil Ben Youssef, who lost his first match in charge to Sekhukhune United before a chastening MTN8 quarter-final exit to this very opponent.

Reports at the time suggested the Tunisian was already under pressure, something chairman Farook Kadodia publicly and firmly denied.

Since then, City have not lost, drawing with Golden Arrows and Richards Bay, beating Kruger United, drawing again with Stellenbosch, then winning both legs of a CAF Confederation Cup preliminary tie against Rukinzo FC in Burundi.

That five-match unbeaten run across all competitions has come with only three goals scored in the league, the joint-lowest tally in the division alongside their goals-against column.

Ben Youssef’s squad flew back from Bujumbura just four days before this fixture, and with a small squad reshaped by eight new arrivals in July, some rotation looks likely.

Andre de Jong, Thalente Mbatha, Evidence Makgopa, Gamphani Lungu and Sihle Nduli are all out through injury, while Sebastian Pedersen, Mpho Padime and Sifiso Luthuli were left unregistered for the CAF Champions League squad.

Tshepang Moremi served the final match of a suspension in continental action in midweek, and since domestic bans do not carry over from continental competition, he should be free to return to the front line here.

Durban City have reported no fresh injury concerns, though Ben Youssef has flagged that a small squad and Wednesday’s trip home from Burundi make one or two changes likely.

The Tunisian has since steadied the ship, guiding City to their first-ever fixture outside South Africa and through it unbeaten, even if goals remain in short supply domestically.
