Pirates frustated in Diski Challenge opener, Sundowns crush Richards Bay

Published on by Nkosiyabuya Sithole

Orlando Pirates failed to secure a victory in their opening match of the DStv Diski Challenge against AmaZulu FC, while Mamelodi Sundowns secured a resounding victory over Richards Bay FC at the King Zwelithini Stadium.

As the Diski Challenge commenced its 10th season, having been established in 2014, the day featured an exciting lineup of four matches.

The Buccaneers, who concluded the previous season in third place, ended their match against Usuthu in a goalless draw.

The first half of the match was evenly contested, with both teams making their way into the attacking zones. However, in the second half, Joseph Makhanya’s team appeared to exert more dominance over their KZN rivals.

Despite their superiority, the Sea Robbers were unable to generate numerous clear opportunities to score. The match exhibited indications of being the season's opener, with both teams appearing to grapple with their fitness levels.

On the other hand, this match marked Vusumuzi Vilakazi's debut as the coach of the AmaZulu reserve team. Following the match, he expressed satisfaction with his team's performance.

Meanwhile, Sundowns easily grabbed three points in their opener against Richards Bay.

With the exit of Sinethemba Badela, who joined Rulani Mokwena at Wydad Casablanca, David Notoane took his place on the Sundowns bench.

The Brazilians concluded the first half with a commanding 3-0 lead over Richards Bay, with Thulani Zandamela scoring twice and Onele Rulwane contributing the third goal.

There was no goal scored in the second half.
