Pirates legend Vilakazi delivers damning verdict on Sundowns and Cardoso

Orlando Pirates legend Benedict ‘Tso’ Vilakazi has slammed Mamelodi Sundowns for dropping their high standards following their current poor run of form.

Sundowns have been going through a purple patch this season and suffered elimination from a second cup competition on Saturday when they exited the Carling Knockout at the Round of 16 against Marumo Gallants.

The game ended goalless, leading to penalty shootouts, which Gallants won 7-6, to advance to the quarter-finals as Miguel Cardoso’s side were dumped out of another competition, having exited the MTN8 at the semi-final.

It is not just in cup competitions but Sundowns have also not been great in the league where they have dropped nine points from 10 games and Vilakazi feels they are on a freefall.

“My worry in all of this is that Sundowns has worked very hard to be up there,” Vilakazi told iDiski TV.

“And that needs all the other PSL teams to go up to try to catch up with them, not for Sundowns to drop. It’s like Sundowns has walked to the mountain and instead of others walking up the mountain Sundowns has decided they want to go down. That’s what they are doing, they went down. This is not what we want to see at Sundowns.”

The Pirates record scorer then went on to claim Sundowns coach Cardoso should be dismissed for overseeing a less than impressive run of form for his team.

What does ‘Tso’ make of Miguel Cardoso?

“Sundowns are playing for five trophies, two down and from the remaining three I minus one, the Champions League,” added Vilakazi.

“So, there’s two that they need to fight for and as Sundowns have said to their coach he needs to win three trophies, the Champions League, the Betway Premiership and one domestic trophy.

“It means already he needs to go because he’s not going to get that, two is done and they are out. I’m counting out the Champions League which means he’s left with two and that means he’s going.”

Sundowns will get back to action after the international break with an away meeting to Remo Stars of Nigeria in the CAF Champions League second preliminary round.
