Pirates move one point behind Sundowns after hard-fought win at Gallants

Orlando Pirates narrowed the gap on league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns in the Betway Premiership standings, securing a hard-fought 2-0 win against Marumo Gallants at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Sunday.

Goals in each half from Kabelo Kgositsile and Nkosinathi Sibisi sealed a crucial three points for the visitors on the road.

The match started cautiously, with both sides feeling each other out in the opening stages. Consequently, clear scoring opportunities were scarce in the first 10 minutes.

Gallants registered the first real threat in the 12th minute when Thapelo Mokobodi’s free-kick from the edge of the area flew just over the crossbar.

Cleverly executed opening goal

Despite that early scare, it was the Buccaneers who controlled possession, consistently probing in the final third. While goal-mouth action was limited, the Sea Robbers always looked dangerous when pushing forward.

Their sustained pressure was rewarded in the 32nd minute. A clever chipped pass from Mokobodi found Kabelo Kgositsile, who made no mistake in finding the back of the net to give the Soweto giants the lead.

Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side went into the halftime break with a 1-0 advantage.

After the restart, the hosts showed renewed intent, launching several promising attacks in an effort to find an equaliser. However, they struggled to create a decisive breakthrough against a resolute Pirates defence.

As the second half wore on, Pirates reasserted their dominance, effectively closing down space and stifling Bahlabane Ba Ntwa’s attempts to build momentum.

Where does victory leave Pirates?

With the intensity of the match dropping slightly after the hour mark, chances remained at a premium for both teams.

The game was effectively put to bed in the 73rd minute when Nkosinathi Sibisi headed in from a corner to double the lead for Ezimnyama Ngenkani. The goal gave Pirates a commanding advantage and left the home side with a mountain to climb.

In the final stages, Orlando Pirates managed the game expertly, tightening their defensive structure to ensure Gallants had no path back into the contest, securing a vital victory.

Victory leaves Pirates on 19 points from seven games, just one behind leaders Sundowns, who have played one match more.
