Pirates star on first Bafana call-up & Sibisi’s leadership

Published on by

Orlando Pirates star Deano van Rooyen has spoken out on his first Bafana Bafana call-up and leadership of Nkosinathi Sibisi.

For van Rooyen, a notable addition to the Bafana Bafana squad, his recent call-up for the international friendlies against Tanzania and Mozambique in Polokwane is a deeply felt honour.

The national team will first face the East African side on Friday evening at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, then clash with the Mambas four days later at the same venue.

Van Rooyen, who moved to the Buccaneers this season from Stellenbosch FC, has been a standout performer, playing a crucial role in Pirates' second-place league finish and their impressive run to the CAF Champions League semi-finals.

Addressing the media in Polokwane on Monday, Monare expressed his belief that this inaugural senior national team selection is a clear validation of the extensive effort and consistent hard work he has invested in his game.

‘IT’S AN HONOUR AND PRIVILEGE’

“It’s an honour and a privilege to get selected for the Bafana squad,” said Van Rooyen as quoted by iDiski Times.

“For me personally I have been working hard, and you never know when a chance will come but for me it is the time now. Just need to be myself for the two games and give my best.”

With Ronwen Williams unavailable, Sibisi has stepped up to lead the national team. Van Rooyen offered clear insight into the type of leader Sibisi is, likely describing him as a committed and vocal presence on the field.

“I think he is someone that doesn’t talk a lot but his actions on the field speak for itself,” added the 28-year-old.

“I think he is that kind of a leader he shows action on the field and that is good for us.”
