Bafana Bafana legend Teboho Moloi has warned Orlando Pirates against underrating Percy Tau when the Soweto Giants host Al Ahly on Saturday.
The two heavyweights are scheduled to play at the Orlando Stadium Stadium in Group C of the ongoing 2024/25 Caf Champions League edition. The sides started their campaign with wins on matchday one, meaning they both have three points in their pool.
Tau has been struggling for form and consistency this season; even in the initial 4-2 win against Stade d'Abidjan, he was introduced in the 75th minute.
Nevertheless, Moloi insists the 30-year-old can't be underrated since he has what it takes to hurt the Buccaneers. In the 10 matches played across all competitions, the Lion of Judah has scored just two goals but the Sea Robbers legend insists it is not enough excuse to let him loose.
You can't rule out Percy Tau – Moloi
“For me, Percy Tau is one of our best players whether we like it or not. He may be going through a difficult time, but we all know what he can do,” the 56-year-old told Far Post.
“You cannot rule out Percy Tau with the roots of Mamelodi Sundowns and that rivalry. When he plays, he will say, ‘I’m playing against Pirates, and I should bring my A-game’.
“On the day, he can be a surprise against us. He knows what it takes to face Pirates; it’s not just playing any other team. A good performance can help him to get back to the national team.
“We’ve seen it with Khanyisa Mayo when he scored against Pirates; it was like he scored a winning goal in the World Cup. The understanding of any other SA player [playing outside of the country] who faces Pirates is different,” Moloi concluded.
Pirates have won three out of the last six meetings against Al Ahly, drawn two and lost just once.
