Polokwane City vs Kaizer Chiefs: Match Preview, Predictions and Betting Tips

Published on by

Kaizer Chiefs arrive at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday riding the crest of a five-match winning streak as they look to all but lock down a top-three finish in the Betway Premiership.

Polokwane City, sitting seventh on 33 points from 23 games, still harbour ambitions of pushing higher into the top half, but they face an Amakhosi side that has scored 12 goals across those five consecutive victories and looks transformed from the outfit that stumbled through a four-game losing run in February and March.

Co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef made it clear this week that nothing less than three points will satisfy his side, stating that a win would effectively confirm Chiefs’ position in the top three and strengthen their bid for CAF Confederation Cup football next season.

Match Preview

This has been a season of two halves for Kaizer Chiefs.

A strong start under Nasreddine Nabi gave way to uncertainty when the Tunisian departed in September, leaving assistants Cedric Kaze and Ben Youssef to pick up the pieces.

After a rocky winter spell that included elimination from cup competitions and a dismal run of four straight defeats between late February and early March, Amakhosi have completely turned the corner.

Their five-match winning streak is the club’s best in the Betway Premiership since the 2019/20 campaign under Ernst Middendorp, when they pushed Mamelodi Sundowns all the way to the final day of the season.

That run started with a gritty 1-0 win over Durban City on March 15, progressed through a 2-0 victory against Magesi and a 3-1 away triumph at Orbit College, and then saw Chiefs dispatch TS Galaxy 2-0 at FNB Stadium before Wednesday’s emphatic 4-1 demolition of Magesi in Polokwane.

Chiefs currently sit third on 45 points from 23 matches, three clear of fourth-placed AmaZulu, with seven fixtures remaining.

The gap to second-placed Orlando Pirates stands at 10 points, though Pirates have played one game more, and the Soweto Derby looms on April 26.

For Polokwane City, the season has been one of steady, understated competence.

Rise and Shine sit seventh with 33 points from the same number of games, just three adrift of the top-five cluster occupied by Sekhukhune United and Durban City.

Their most recent outing was a 1-1 draw away to Chippa United on April 11, where they fought back from behind after conceding before half time.

Before that, a 2-1 away win over TS Galaxy on April 8 ended a three-match winless streak, with Juan Mutudza and Mokibelo Ramabu both on the scoresheet.

At home, Polokwane have been reasonably solid throughout the campaign, and the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium remains a difficult venue for visiting sides.

They did lose at home to Kaizer Chiefs in the final match of last season (0-1) but famously beat them 2-0 at this same venue in December 2024, with goals from Oswin Appollis and Ramabu.

Home and Away Form

Chiefs have been strong on the road lately, winning five of their last eight away matches with only one defeat in that stretch.

Polokwane’s home record is decent but not fearsome, and they have drawn as many matches as they have won at the Old Peter Mokaba this term.

The hosts will hope that playing at altitude in Limpopo on a quick turnaround works in their favour, though Chiefs have already spent the entire week in Polokwane following their midweek clash with Magesi at the New Peter Mokaba.

Head to Head

These two clubs have met 21 times since their first encounter in December 2008.

Kaizer Chiefs hold a clear advantage in the overall record, with nine wins to Polokwane City’s four and eight draws.

However, recent meetings have been far more even.

In their last five clashes, Chiefs have won just once, drawn twice and lost twice, scoring only five goals in that period.

The reverse fixture earlier this season took place at FNB Stadium on August 13, 2025, with Siphesihle Ndlovu’s 79th-minute strike giving Chiefs a narrow 1-0 victory in a match where Polokwane actually had the better of the second half chances.

Before that, the sides played out a goalless draw at FNB Stadium in May 2025 to close out last season.

Polokwane’s most memorable recent result against Amakhosi was that 2-0 home win in December 2024, when coach Phuti Mohafe’s men thoroughly outplayed Chiefs on the day and climbed to third in the table.

The overall trend suggests low-scoring matches between these two, with only five of their last 10 encounters producing more than two goals.

Team News

Polokwane City

Defender Lebohang Nkaki has been flagged with an injury concern and is a doubt for this fixture.

Beyond that, Mohafe has a largely settled squad to pick from.

Goalkeeper Lindokuhle Mathebula appears to have reclaimed the number one jersey in recent weeks, featuring in the wins over TS Galaxy and Magesi and the draw at Chippa United.

Juan Mutudza has been the standout performer in attack, scoring his first goal for the club in the Galaxy win and impressing with his movement from wide positions.

Mokibelo Ramabu remains the most consistent threat in front of goal and will be eager to add to his tally.

The midfield trio of Manuel Kambala, Ndamulelo Maphangule and Tholo Matuludi provides a good mix of defensive solidity and forward thrust.

Thabang Matuludi, the right back who has earned Bafana Bafana recognition this season, will be a key figure in attack down the flank.

Predicted Polokwane City XI (4-3-3):

Mathebula; T. Matuludi, Nikani, Nkwe, Ramaja; Kambala, Maphangule, Th. Matuludi; Ramabu, Tshikweta, Mutudza

Kaizer Chiefs

Chiefs have remained in Polokwane all week following the Magesi win, which should ease any fatigue concerns from the quick turnaround.

The big news is that no player picked up a yellow card against Magesi, meaning the four players who went into that match on three bookings each remain available.

Flavio Silva, Mfundo Vilakazi, Siphesihle Ndlovu and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo are all one caution away from a one-match suspension, and with the Soweto Derby against Pirates coming on April 26, the coaching staff may be tempted to manage minutes for key figures.

Rushwin Dortley remains a long-term absentee with a knee injury that has kept him out for close to a year.

Brandon Petersen has been superb in goal this season and was rested for periods earlier in the campaign following surgery, but he started against Magesi and will almost certainly continue.

Gaston Sirino has been sidelined since picking up an injury earlier in the season and remains unavailable.

The front four of Wandile Duba, Mduduzi Shabalala, Glody Lilepo and Flavio Silva were all on the scoresheet in the Magesi rout, with Khanyisa Mayo adding a goal off the bench, so Ben Youssef and Kaze have real attacking depth to call on.

The big question is whether they will rotate given the derby is just eight days away, or stick with the winning formula.

Predicted Kaizer Chiefs XI (4-2-3-1):

Petersen; Monyane, Miguel, McCarthy, Cross; Ndlovu, Maboe; Lilepo, Shabalala, Duba; Silva

The Managers

Phuti Mohafe (Polokwane City)

Mohafe has quietly become one of the most effective coaches in the Betway Premiership since taking charge in December 2023.

He guided Rise and Shine to a top-eight finish at the end of his first half-season, then followed that up with a seventh-place finish last term, and has Polokwane comfortably in the same territory again this season.

The 52-year-old has spoken openly about feeling overlooked when coaching awards and plaudits are handed out, but his record speaks for itself.

Mohafe’s teams are well-organised, difficult to beat and dangerous on the counter attack, and he recently completed his CAF A Licence to further develop his tactical knowledge.

He will back his players to compete with anyone at the Old Peter Mokaba.

The Tunisian and the Burundian have endured a turbulent ride since being elevated from assistant coaches to the top job in September 2025.

Early results were mixed, cup competition exits piled on the pressure, and a torrid run of four consecutive defeats in February and March had sections of the fanbase demanding their heads.

The current five-match winning streak has quietened the loudest critics, and their points per match ratio of 2.21 under Ben Youssef’s leadership compares favourably with many of the division’s most established coaches.

The duo have built their recent success on midfield stability, with the partnership of Siphesihle Ndlovu and Lebohang Maboe providing a solid platform, and on restoring confidence to an attacking unit that struggled badly for goals during the losing spell.

Their future at Naturena may depend on where Chiefs finish, but for now, the momentum is firmly with them.

Tactical Preview

Kaizer Chiefs have settled into a 4-2-3-1 system during their winning run, using Ndlovu and Maboe as the double pivot with Shabalala floating in the number 10 role behind Silva.

Lilepo and Duba provide width and pace from the flanks, and the full backs, particularly Bradley Cross on the left, push high to create overloads.

Chiefs’ build-up play through midfield has become more patient and controlled in recent weeks, a marked shift from the direct approach that characterised the earlier stages of the campaign.

Polokwane City under Mohafe typically operate in a 4-3-3, with Kambala sitting deepest in midfield and the two wide forwards, usually Ramabu and Mutudza, given licence to drift inside and create numerical superiority in central areas.

Thabang Matuludi’s overlapping runs from right back offer an extra outlet, and his delivery into the box is one of Polokwane’s most potent weapons.

The key tactical battle could come down the flanks.

Chiefs’ full backs will need to balance their attacking instinct against the threat posed by Ramabu and Mutudza in transition.

If Polokwane can win the ball high up the pitch and spring quick counter attacks, they will cause Chiefs problems, just as they did in the December 2024 victory.

But if Chiefs establish control of possession in central midfield, as they did in the 1-0 reverse fixture win in August, they should be able to dictate the tempo and create chances through their attacking quartet.

Set pieces could also prove decisive, with Inacio Miguel a genuine aerial threat from corners and free kicks.

Betting Tips and Predictions
Best Value Tip
Kaizer Chiefs to Win and Under 3.5 Goals
Chiefs have won their last five and are clearly the form team, but this fixture historically produces tight, cagey affairs. Four of the last five head-to-head meetings finished with two or fewer goals. A controlled Chiefs victory in a match with limited goals is the most likely outcome, and this combination typically offers better value than a straight away win.
Alternative Tip
Both Teams to Score: No
Despite conceding in two of their last three outings, Chiefs kept clean sheets in three of the five games before that. The head-to-head record between these two teams is littered with clean sheets. Three of the last five meetings saw at least one side fail to score, and Polokwane have not found the net in three of their last four games against Amakhosi.
Goalscorer Pick
Flavio Silva Anytime Scorer
Silva scored in the midweek win over Magesi, taking his tally to nine in all competitions. He has netted in three of his last four appearances and is playing with growing confidence. At the prices typically available for anytime scorer markets in the Betway Premiership, the Guinea-Bissau international represents solid value.

Prediction

Final Score Prediction
Polokwane City

Kaizer Chiefs

Chiefs are in the form of their season and have too much firepower for a Polokwane side that has been inconsistent in front of goal in recent weeks.

The visitors have already spent the entire week in Polokwane, removing any concerns about travel fatigue, and their confidence is sky high after putting four past Magesi at the same city’s New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday.

Polokwane’s record against the big three has been respectable at home, but they have not beaten Chiefs in this fixture since December 2024, and the current version of Amakhosi looks a completely different proposition to the side that lost that day.

With seven goals scored across their last two matches and the Soweto Derby providing extra motivation to keep winning, expect Chiefs to control this match and take all three points with a professional, clean-sheet performance.
