Polokwane’s season has followed a bumpier path. Rise and Shine opened with a battling 2-1 win at Richards Bay, were then held 3-3 by Stellenbosch in a six-goal thriller at home, lost 2-0 away to Sekhukhune United, drew a blank 0-0 with newly promoted Milford, and then shared four goals with Marumo Gallants in their most recent outing.

One win, three draws and one defeat from five leaves them on six points, a healthy distance off the pace but not out of touch with the top half either.

Moloto took over at Rise and Shine in July after a spell as assistant to Kwanele Kopo at University of Pretoria, and while his stated ambition is a top-three finish and continental qualification, he has been candid about the defensive issues that have followed him into the new job.

His side conceded nine goals across their first four matches of the season, and Moloto himself flagged the leaky rearguard as the priority to fix during the MTN8 break.

There is a compelling subplot at both ends of the pitch here. Chiefs have failed to keep a clean sheet in three straight matches, a trend da Cruz addressed bluntly after the Siwelele win, while Polokwane have shipped eight goals in five league games of their own.

The 53-year-old also had a previous stint on the Amakhosi coaching staff two years ago and has settled into the role quickly, guiding his new club to an unbeaten start while openly pushing his squad to sharpen up defensively.

His post-match comments after the Siwelele win, in which he spoke of a lack of leadership and character in his defensive line, suggest a coach who is not content to let good results paper over deeper issues.

Bayano “Willy” Moloto is in his first senior head coaching role in the Betway Premiership, having returned to Polokwane City after a season as assistant to Kwanele Kopo at University of Pretoria.
