Rayners at the double as Sundowns sink 10-man Magesi to move ahead of Chiefs

Mamelodi Sundowns moved to the top of the PSL table following a 3-0 thrashing of Magesi FC on Sunday.

Iqraam Rayners scored a brace with Kutlwano Letlhaku also on target as Miguel Cardoso’s men sealed a comfortable victory at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Magesi played with 10 men for the entire second half after Samuel Darpoh’s 42nd minute sending off but Sundowns had been 1-0 ahead by then, following Letlhaku’s 22nd minute strike before Rayners made the points safe with his brace in the 66th and 74th minutes.

Sundowns break deadlock in style

Letlhaku tapped in after a good exchange of passes that started with Tashreeq Matthews on the right, who passed to Aubrey Modiba, the left-back switching play to right-back Thapelo Morena.

Morena struck a ferocious low shot which Letlhaku connected into the net with his outstretched leg to break the deadlock.

Sundowns’ work would be made easier when Darpoh was sent off for a second bookable offence three minutes to the break.

Rayners makes points safe with brace

The Brazilians kept asking the questions against a defensive Magesi and the answer arrived in the 66th minute, when Rayners struck the second, and the third was scored eight minutes later.

Modiba floated in a good ball from a freekick and Rayners created space between him and the Magesi defenders to get a free header past Elvis Chipezeze for 3-0.

The win sees Sundowns move ahead of both Sekhukhune United and Kaizer Chiefs to the top of the table with 14 points, one ahead of the unbeaten duo who will clash on Tuesday.
