Pitso Mosimane has been strongly linked with a sensational return to Mamelodi Sundowns, but a major stumbling block could delay the move. Former Masandawana striker Katlego Mphela has shared his thoughts on whether the veteran coach can work within the club’s current structure.
The Sporting Director Factor
Sundowns currently have a Sporting Director, Fleming Berg, and according to Mphela, this could be a sticking point for Mosimane, who is known for his hands-on approach and desire for full control.
In an interview with Soccer Laduma, Mphela who played under Mosimane at SuperSport United, Sundowns, and Bafana Bafana suggested that the coach would want authority over player recruitment and his technical team.
“I’ll speak from what I know, the Pitso I know,” Mphela said.
“He’s evolved with football over the years, you can tell when you talk to him. But I’m not sure about this one (Fleming Berg). There have already been complaints from fans and others saying they don’t really need him.
The Pitso I know likes being in control of the whole setup, signing his own players and working with his own technical team. So I’m not convinced they would work well together but you never know in football.”

Would Pitso’s Return Be a Good Move?
When asked if bringing Mosimane back would be wise, Mphela highlighted the coach’s previous success at Chloorkop.
“Honestly, in terms of football, they achieved a lot together. He brought back the winning philosophy at Sundowns, won the CAF Champions League and multiple league titles, and helped players like Bongani Zungu and Keagan Dolly move overseas.
So football-wise, I don’t see a problem. But when it comes to personal matters and what’s in the media, I’m not sure. On the pitch, though, I don’t see anything wrong with him returning.”
Mosimane’s Trophy-Laden Past
Mosimane, now 61, spent eight successful years at Sundowns from 2012 to 2020, winning almost everything on offer, including the 2016 CAF Champions League. He later joined Egyptian giants Al Ahly, where he added two more Champions League titles to his resume.
