Richards Bay vs Orlando Pirates: match preview, prediction and betting tips

Published on by

Orlando Pirates travel to uMhlathuze Stadium on Friday, April 10 to face Richards Bay in the Betway Premiership, with the title race firmly on the line for the Buccaneers.

Pirates sit second in the standings on 54 points from 23 matches, two behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, meaning anything less than three points here could prove fatal to their championship hopes.

Richards Bay, meanwhile, are in 11th place with 26 points after their midweek 2-1 victory over Stellenbosch ended a three-match losing run.

The Natal Rich Boyz are five points clear of the relegation zone and still have ambitions of sneaking into the top eight before the season wraps up.

Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side have been nothing short of outstanding since the second half of the season began.

They are unbeaten in their last six league outings, winning five and drawing one, with their only dropped points coming in a 1-1 stalemate against Siwelele on March 14.

The attacking numbers are staggering: Pirates have scored 20 goals across those six games, including a 6-0 annihilation of TS Galaxy, a 3-0 demolition of Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby and, most recently, a 5-0 hammering of Golden Arrows on Tuesday night.

Relebohile Mofokeng bagged a brace against Arrows, while Oswin Appollis also scored twice, taking his league tally to five for the campaign.

Defensively, Pirates have conceded just nine goals in 23 league matches this season, which remains the best record in the division.

Their away record is strong, too, and they will travel to KwaZulu-Natal with real confidence after putting together a seven-match unbeaten run on the road.

After a dismal spell that saw them lose three consecutive league matches against Pirates, AmaZulu (1-2) and Durban City (0-1), Richards Bay bounced back with an important 2-1 home win over Stellenbosch on Tuesday.

That result moved them up to 11th and eased the pressure on co-coach Papi Zothwane, who took charge in January after Brandon Truter’s departure.

Home form has been the bedrock of Richards Bay’s survival push, with just two defeats in 11 matches at the Umhlathuze Sports Complex this season.

Zothwane was vocal after the Stellenbosch win, warning Pirates that his side will not roll over at home.

“They must not come here and think they are going to win the match. It is going to be a tough game and we will be ready,” the Richards Bay coach said.

The Natal Rich Boyz also beat Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 at this venue in early March, so there is evidence to back up Zothwane’s confidence.

The main concern for Bay remains their inability to score freely, with just 18 goals in 23 league games this campaign, the fourth-lowest tally in the division.

Head-to-head record

This fixture has been completely one-sided in recent history.

Pirates have won all of their last six meetings against Richards Bay across all competitions, with five of those victories coming by a single-goal margin.

The reverse fixture earlier this season, played at Orlando Amstel Arena on March 11, ended 2-0 to Pirates, with Mofokeng opening the scoring before Evidence Makgopa sealed it from the penalty spot deep in stoppage time.

Before that, Pirates won 1-0 in the Carling Knockout in November 2025 and completed a league double over Bay in the 2024-25 season, winning 1-0 on both occasions.

Richards Bay’s last victory over Pirates dates back to May 2024, a 1-0 win at Orlando Stadium.

Overall, Pirates have won seven of the nine meetings between the two clubs, with Richards Bay managing just that one solitary win and one draw.

Goals have been scarce in this fixture. Only 11 have been scored across those nine meetings, averaging barely more than one per game.

Team news

Orlando Pirates

Ouaddou confirmed before the Golden Arrows match that central midfielder Sihle Nduli remains unavailable after an injury sustained in early November 2025, with no firm return date yet established.

Centre-back Tapelo Xoki has been sidelined since May 2025 and will not feature.

Defender Thabiso Sesane has also been absent from recent squads.

The good news for Pirates is that the core of the team is fit and firing.

Mofokeng was named Man of the Match for the second game running after his brace against Arrows, and he will be fresh for this one having played 61 minutes before being replaced.

Patrick Maswanganyi came off the bench against Arrows and could come back into the starting eleven for this match, potentially at the expense of Masindi Nemtajela in midfield.

Evidence Makgopa will also be pushing for a start after scoring as a substitute.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Chaine; Sebelebele, Seema, Sibisi, Hotto; Mbatha, Makhaula, Maswanganyi; Mofokeng, Mbuthuma, Appollis

Richards Bay players warm up

Richards Bay will be boosted by the momentum of beating Stellenbosch, but face some squad concerns heading into this quick turnaround.

Veteran striker Gabadinho Mhango has been ruled out for the remainder of the season through injury.

Knox Mutizwa was released from the club due to ill discipline and is no longer available for selection.

Defender Tshepo Mabua is an injury doubt.

Zothwane is expected to stick with a similar lineup to the one that beat Stellenbosch, led by the in-form Sanele Barns in midfield and the experienced Lundi Mahala up front.

Goalkeeper Ian Otieno will be vital between the sticks, with the Kenyan international likely to face a barrage of shots from the Pirates attack.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Otieno; Sikhakhane, Mcineka, Zulu, Mntungwa; Mthethwa, Mthembu, Zikhali; Barns, Mahala, Gumede

Mofokeng is the standout performer in the entire Betway Premiership this season, not just in this fixture.

The 21-year-old Bafana Bafana international has nine goals and five assists in all competitions, was crowned Betway Premiership Player of the Month for January/February, and scored a hat-trick in the 6-0 thrashing of TS Galaxy before adding two more against Golden Arrows.

He is the player who makes Pirates tick, and his ability to drift inside from the left wing and create something from nothing is the single biggest threat Richards Bay will have to deal with.

For Richards Bay, Barns is the creative heartbeat.

The midfielder is unpredictable on the ball, good under pressure and capable of sparking counter-attacks with his dribbling and vision.

If Bay are going to cause Pirates any problems, Barns will likely be at the centre of it.

The managers

Abdeslam Ouaddou (Orlando Pirates)

The former Morocco international took over from Jose Riveiro in June 2025 and has stepped into large shoes, given Riveiro’s trophy-laden three-year stint at the club.

Ouaddou played 68 times for the Atlas Lions and had stints at Fulham, Olympiacos and several French and Qatari clubs during his playing career.

His coaching CV, including spells at AS Vita in the Congo and Marumo Gallants, was modest before his appointment at Pirates, but he has quickly won over the fan base with attacking, front-foot football.

Pirates have won 17 of 23 league games under his watch this term, and his man-management of young talents like Mofokeng has been widely praised.

He has been quoted saying the squad are “prepared to die on the pitch” to win the title, which tells you everything about the mentality he has instilled.

Papi Zothwane (Richards Bay)

Zothwane was appointed in January 2025 after stints on the coaching staff at Magesi FC.

He inherited a side that was 14th in the table with nine points from 14 matches and has steadied the ship, guiding them to mid-table safety with a defensive-first approach.

The 44-year-old has made Richards Bay hard to beat at home and built a system around counter-attacking football and defensive discipline.

His post-match comments after the Stellenbosch win showed a coach who is tactically aware and comfortable getting a reaction from his players after setbacks.

Tactical preview

Pirates are expected to line up in their usual 4-3-3, with Mofokeng on the left, Appollis on the right and Yanela Mbuthuma through the middle.

The wide forwards are the real danger men, cutting inside onto their stronger foot and combining with the advanced midfielders in the half-spaces.

Thalente Mbatha of Orlando Pirates vs Golden Arrows

Thalente Mbatha operates as the deepest of the three central midfielders, allowing Makhehlene Makhaula and Maswanganyi to push forward and support the attack.

Full-backs Kamogelo Sebelebele and Deon Hotto are expected to overlap and provide width, which stretches opposing defences and creates room for the front three.

Richards Bay are likely to set up in a 4-3-3 of their own, but in practice it will look far more like a 4-5-1 without the ball.

Zothwane’s side will sit deep, stay compact and try to deny Pirates space in the final third.

The key for Bay will be managing transitions: when they win the ball, Barns and Thulani Gumede need to break quickly before Pirates can recover their defensive shape.

Tlakusani Mthethwa will likely be tasked with tracking Mofokeng’s runs, which will be a thankless job given how sharp the Pirates winger has looked.

Pirates’ biggest tactical vulnerability this season has been against deep-sitting sides that frustrate them.

They drew 1-1 with Siwelele in that exact scenario and needed a late penalty to see off Richards Bay in the reverse fixture, so there is a blueprint for Bay to stay in the game if they can keep their discipline for 90 minutes.

The question is whether Bay have the quality to hurt Pirates on the break, especially without Mhango’s pace up front.

Betting tips and predictions

Betting tips
Orlando Pirates to win & under 3.5 goals
Pirates have won four of their last five against Bay by a 1-0 scoreline. Bay’s home games are tight, low-scoring affairs. Five of their last six league games finished under 2.5 goals.
Under 2.5 goals
75% of Richards Bay’s league matches this season have produced under 2.5 goals. The H2H average across nine meetings is just 1.2 goals per game. A low-scoring, cagey match is the most likely outcome here.
Relebohile Mofokeng anytime goalscorer
Nine goals in all competitions this season, including a brace in the reverse fixture. He scored twice against Golden Arrows on Tuesday and is in the form of his life heading into this game.
Best value tip: Orlando Pirates to win to nil
Richards Bay have scored just 18 goals in 23 league games. Pirates have kept the most clean sheets in the league (13) and shut out Bay in the reverse fixture 2-0. Bay managed zero shots on target in the first half of that match. At Richards Bay’s home ground this is a tougher ask, but the value here is strong given the away side’s defensive record and Bay’s lack of firepower.

There is little doubt about the direction of travel in this fixture.

Pirates are overwhelming favourites and rightly so, given their form, the quality gap between the two squads and the H2H record.

The twist is the venue.

Richards Bay coach Papi Zothwane ahead of a competitive game.

Richards Bay have been stubborn at home all season, and Zothwane’s side beat Kaizer Chiefs and Stellenbosch in their last two outings at the Umhlathuze Sports Complex.

That home form means this is unlikely to be a blowout despite the gap in the table.

Expect a tight first half as Bay try to stay organised, followed by Pirates eventually grinding them down in the second period as fitness and quality tell.

The under 2.5 goals angle is the sharpest statistical bet on the card, backed by Bay’s defensive approach and the historically low-scoring nature of this fixture.

Final score prediction

Score prediction
Richards Bay

Orlando Pirates

Pirates have won four of the last five H2H meetings by 1-0, but the 5-0 destruction of Golden Arrows on Tuesday suggests this team is hitting their stride at the perfect time.

Bay’s home record will keep this competitive for long stretches, but their lack of goals (0.78 per game this season) and the absence of Mhango will limit their threat on the break.

Pirates have the quality to find a second and shut the door. Mofokeng and Appollis are in devastating form, and the Buccaneers’ defence has been the tightest in the league all season.
