Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Romain Folz has explained why he ditched FIFA job to join the Betway Premiership side.
Folz became part of Masandawana this season following significant changes in the coaching staff, which included the departure of Rulani Mokwena and other technical personnel.
In what was a shocking move, they roped in Folz who was the FIFA performance manager since November last year.
The former AmaZulu coach says he joined Sundowns because he felt it was an opportunity to work for a top club on the African continent.
Additionally, Sundowns’ participation in competitions like CAF Champions League and upcoming FIFA Club World Cup also convinced him.
WHAT CONVINCED FOLZ TO JOIN SUNDOWNS
“To be honest, I was very happy with my role at FIFA; I had a lot of responsibilities, working with good people on meaningful projects,” said Folz.
“But when Sundowns came calling, so many elements came into play. The prospect of working with a top Club in Africa, playing numerous games and competing in several competitions was incredibly appealing.
“I also have great respect for the Motsepe family and what they have done for South African football. Their level of passion, dedication and enthusiasm for the Club is truly inspiring.”
Folz emphasised that the chance to work alongside Manqoba Mngqithi, who shares a comparable footballing philosophy, was a significant influence on his decision.
FOLZ SAYS HE WAS INTERESTED IN WORKING WITH MNGQITHI
“Additionally, working with Coach Manqoba Mngqithi was a significant factor in my decision.
“I share many football ideas with him and I believe that our combined vision can elevate the team further.
“The opportunity to collaborate with a coaching staff that values innovation and player development aligns perfectly with my philosophy.
“I see this as a chance to contribute not only to the Club’s success but also to the growth of the players and the entire organization.”
