Mduduzi Shabalala opens up on injury that ended his World Cup dream

Kaizer Chiefs star Mduduzi Shabalala has spoken out about the significant challenges he has faced since suffering a serious injury earlier this year.

The talented attacker broke his arm during a match against Mamelodi Sundowns in May, an incident that occurred near the conclusion of the previous season.

The injury sidelined Shabalala for the remainder of the campaign, forcing him to sit out the final three games for Chiefs.

It also came just days before Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos named his World Cup squad and ultimately ruled him out of contention, having been a strong candidate for a place in the team.

Consequently, the 22-year-old was also unable to participate in the club’s pre-season tour in Spain this month as he focused on his rehabilitation.

Speaking after securing a new endorsement deal with PUMA, Shabalala reflected on the tough few months he has endured.

“It was a very difficult moment for me,” he said as per KickOff. “I was disappointed because I had worked hard and had big goals for both my club and the national team. But I also knew that setbacks are part of football, so I focused on my recovery and stayed motivated, knowing my time will come again.”

Providing an update on his progress, Shabalala expressed optimism about his return to the pitch.

“It is going well, and I’m getting stronger every day,” he said. “Mentally, this period has taught me patience, resilience, and the importance of staying positive during difficult times.”

“It’s helped me grow not only as a player but also as a person, and I believe I’ll come back even stronger.”

The return date for Shabalala is still not certain but he is hoping to be fit soon enough to contribute towards Chiefs’ objectives, which include challenging for the Premier Soccer League title as well as the CAF Confederation Cup.

Shabalala’s absence from pre-season also means he will need to convince new coach Fernando da Cruz who has had an opportunity to look at all his players during the nearly three weeks that he has been in charge.
