Sibiya reveals Mothiba’s hidden role in his transfer from Sundowns to France

Defender Thato Sibiya has shared the encouraging words he received from former Lille striker Lebo Mothiba before completing his move to the French club from Mamelodi Sundowns.

The 20-year-old has joined the Ligue 1 side on a season-long loan, which includes an option for a permanent transfer. Initially, Sibiya will join Lille’s reserve team to acclimate to European football.

This move marks a significant step for Sibiya, who has already made a name for himself at Sundowns and has represented South Africa at the U17 and U20 levels, competing in both the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA U20 World Cup.

Sibiya is not the first South African to play for Lille. Mothiba, who is now his teammate at Sundowns, began his European career at the club’s academy in 2014.

He made his professional debut for Lille in 2018 before transferring to Strasbourg later that year.

This connection provided Sibiya with valuable insight into the club as he prepared for his new chapter in France.

Speaking to the club’s media department after the move was finalised, Sibiya expressed his enthusiasm and outlined his ambitions.

“I am very grateful to have had this opportunity to join LOSC. I am proud and happy to sign for this great club, and very excited and eager to start working,” he said.

“I am a dynamic and fast defender. I am determined to develop here and integrate as quickly as possible, starting by adapting to French life and its football.”

Sibiya also revealed the crucial advice he received from his senior colleague.

“Before coming, I spoke with Lebo Mothiba, who was my teammate at Mamelodi Sundowns,” he explained. “When I told him I had the opportunity to come here, he told me not to hesitate and to go for it. He was very happy for me and spoke very positively about the club and the city.”

Now in France, Sibiya aims to emulate Mothiba’s success and build a lasting career in European football.
