South Africa vs Angola Lineups: Mbokazi starts as Broos Goes for Tried and Tested

Published on by

South Africa will open their Africa Cup of Nations campaign against Angola on Monday, with coach Hugo Broos opting for experience in his starting XI.

Despite recent tensions between Broos and Mbekezeli Mbokazi, the defender has been handed a place in the lineup as Bafana Bafana look to avoid another slow start at the tournament.

South Africa sharpened up with a 1-0 win over a second-string Ghana side in Dobsonville last week, and tonight’s clash doubles as a milestone, Broos’ 50th match in charge of the national team.

Consistency, however, meets a stern test. Angola remain a stubborn opponent, with Bafana failing to secure victory in their last six encounters against the Palancas Negras across all competitions.

MABULULU ON THE BENCH FOR ANGOLA

Angola coach has opted to begin with former Cape Town City goalkeeper Hugo Marquez between the posts, reinforcing his trust in experience at the back. The only notable surprise in the lineup is the decision to leave star forward Mabululu on the bench, a move that could shape the attacking dynamics later in the game.
