The versatile midfielder will continue his development in Sweden

Kaizer Chiefs teen sensation Steven Mendes has joined Swedish club Hammarby which is partially owned by legendary striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The 15-year-old completed the transfer just in time for the August 26 deadline day and will begin a new chapter in his development.

Mendes is an all-rounded midfielder who is not afraid to play in a defensive role but is revered for his great passing ability plus his cracking goals.

The midfielder’s versatility is a major plus

Having represented South Africa at U15 and U17 levels, Mendes brings international experience to his new home and arrives after scoring 20 goals in 34 games for the GDL team.

“He’s a versatile midfielder, comfortable playing as a box-to-box 8 or a creative 10,” South African agent Andrew Matjila, who has a background in youth coaching told FARPost of the player’s skillset.

“At just 15, turning 16, his finishing ability and eye for spectacular goals stand out. A move to Europe at this stage would be crucial for his development.

Will Chiefs regret losing Steven Mendes?

“We’ve witnessed West African talents flourish in Europe’s top leagues from a young age, and the impact on their careers is undeniable.”

Chiefs are reported to have included sell-on and first refusal clauses in the deal which leaves them in a great position to benefit from his talent once it is fully harnessed.

Hammarby are one of Stockholm’s top sides, who have won the Swedish Allsvenskan once, and Ibrahimovic purchased a 23.5 per cent stake in 2019.
