Sundowns coach Mngqithi throws jab at Orlando Pirates over title race

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has thrown a jab at Orlando Pirates who appear determined to contest the league title against the Brazilians this season.

Mngqithi was speaking after his side secure a 2-1 win over Royal AM on Wednesday night.

Both Pirates and Sundowns have won all their opening four games in the Betway Premiership

While Masandawana have dominated the league, winning it seven times consecutively, the Buccaneers finished in the second position in the last two seasons.

Mngqithi acknowledged that the Soweto giants seem more formidable this season; however, he raised concerns about their squad depth to manage both the league and the CAF Champions League effectively.

He further noted that Pirates often face challenges against smaller teams, which contributes to their inconsistency.

MNGQITHI ON WHAT COULD HOLD PIRATES BACK

“I think I said it from the beginning in the launch that for me they are the team that’s going to be really pushing us,” said Mngqithi.

“I hope and pray they do have the depth to carry themselves during the group stages and the league because I think that’s where the separation will take place because I do believe they are a very good team.

“They tried to rotate the squad, unfortunately it did not work out very well in the Carling. But honestly speaking I think they are a team that will really pose a lot of problems.

“But I still maintain that they are a team that doesn’t do well against small teams. So far, they have really done well but let’s continue and see because that’s where I think maybe the championship will be decided.”
