Mamelodi Sundowns started 2026 in victorious fashion when they beat Orbit College 2-0 to move to the top of the PSL standings on Monday, January 19.

Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso left many of his big hitters on the bench, with an eye on Friday’s CAF Champions League clash against Al-Hilal, but still got the result that he was looking for.

What will delight Cardoso and Sundowns fans is the identity of the scorer of the second goal as it came from their new big-money signing Brayan Leon. The Colombian striker, whose total transfer package is reported to be $3.2 million (R52 million), headed home on his debut having come on in the second half.

Sundowns fans will hope that is the first of many from Leon as they look to make it nine straight PSL titles while also eyeing CAF Champions League glory.

The win sent Sundowns to the top of the table with 29 points from 14 matches, one more than Orlando Pirates, who are now second, but with two games in hand over the PSL champions.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS’ NEXT MATCH & DATES

Sundowns have little time to rest as they will be back in action on Friday, January 23 when they host Sudanese giants Al-Hilal in their third CAF Champions League group stage match at Loftus Versfeld.

The 2024-25 Champions League finalists started their group stage campaign with a 3-1 win over DR Congo’s St Eloi Lupopo before a goalless draw against Rulani Mokwena’s MC Alger and will be looking for maximum points on home turf.
