Mamelodi Sundowns embark on their FIFA International Cup campaign on Saturday, September 19 when they face Saudi giants Al Ahli at Loftus Versfeld.

Sundowns have home ground advantage in this clash against Al Ahli, who they must overcome in the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup, if they want to go all the way and reach the final where European champions Paris Saint-Germain await.

Al Ahli secured their spot by defeating Auckland City, setting up a tantalising encounter between the champions of Africa and Asia.

A win would earn Sundowns their first trophy of the competition and advance them to the FIFA Challenger Cup, placing them just one victory away from the Intercontinental Cup final.

Sundowns’ tough road to glory

Their opponent in the Challenger Cup will be the winner of the FIFA Derby of the Americas, which pits Mexico’s Toluca against the eventual 2026 Copa Libertadores champions.

The winner of the Challenger Cup will then secure a coveted spot in the final against the champions of Europe.

As Europe’s representatives, PSG received a direct bye to the final, creating a challenging but exciting path for Sundowns. To be crowned world champions, the South African side would need to defeat Al Ahli, overcome either Toluca or the South American champions and finally conquer PSG.

This means Sundowns could face the champions of Asia, a top team from the Americas and the champions of Europe in succession. While the sporting challenge is immense, the potential rewards are equally significant for a club that is increasingly making its mark on the global stage.

Sundowns will receive approximately $1 million (R16 million) even if they are eliminated in their opening match against Al Ahli but a victory would double their earnings to around $2 million (R32 million).

Reaching the final could see that figure rise to $4 million (R64 million), with the ultimate prize of $5 million (R80 million) reserved for the world champion.

Sundowns head into the tournament on the back of an unbeaten league run, having won six and drawn two of their opening eight games, to move to the top of the table with 20 points, seven ahead of second-placed Orlando Pirates, who have played five matches.
