Sundowns increase offer for Pirates-linked defender ‘by a few million’

Mamelodi Sundowns have reportedly submitted a substantial new offer for Orlando Pirates-linked Polokwane City star Thabang Matuludi as they scramble to address a growing defensive crisis.

The reigning African champions are facing a severe shortage at the right-back position after Khuliso Mudau was sidelined with a long-term injury.

Their problems were compounded when another defender, Zuko Mdunyelwa, was stretchered off during their Betway Premiership match against Milford FC at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday.

Sundowns firm up Matuludi interest

With Thapelo Morena now the only recognised option for the role and a congested fixture list ahead, the Tshwane giants are eager to reinforce their squad to prevent further setbacks.

According to KickOff, Sundowns have significantly increased their initial bid for Matuludi in an effort to secure his signature. The club is reportedly optimistic about finalising the deal in the coming days.

“The club has submitted a new offer for the services of the player,” a club source told KickOff. “They have now increased the offer by a few million.”

However, Sundowns may face competition from Pirates, who have also shown sustained interest in the defender.

Battle with Pirates in the offing?

Matuludi has been linked to Pirates since June when he linked up with Bafana Bafana for the 2026 World Cup where he served as Mudau’s backup but did not play a single minute.

However, a deal to the Soweto giants is yet to materialise and Sundowns could move with speed and steal him from the Buccaneers if both Polokwane and the player accept their offer.

With Pirates creating room for an extra right-back following the release of Deano van Rooyen, a battle for the signature of Matuludi could be in the offing.

The 27-year-old has made 72 appearances for Rise and Shine, scoring six goals while providing a couple of assists, and with his future uncertain, he is yet to play this season.
