Mamelodi Sundowns stunned in CAF Women’s Champions League

Mamelodi Sundowns’ defence of their CAF Women’s Champions League got off to a losing start following a 1-0 defeat to Egyptian side FC Masar in Morocco on Sunday.

Debutants Masar stunned Sundowns thanks to a penalty late in the first half from Sandrine Niyonkuru and they held on to claim the biggest scalp in the competition.

Sundowns had opportunities to take the lead when Karabo Dhlamini’s cross went begging but that was after the Egyptian side had threatened to score an early goal.

Tiisetso Makhubela then failed to head home Kholosa Biyana’s pass while Boitumelo Rabale also missed just before halftime.

It proved costly for the defending champions when Makhubela brought down Niyonkuru in the box and she stepped up to convert the penalty.

Sundowns kept probing in the second half in search of the equaliser but could not find the breakthrough as their opponents held on for the win.

Banyana Ba Styles will now take on Ethiopia’s CBE FC on Wednesday before they complete group stage action against debutants Edo Queens on Sunday.

Jerry Tshabalala’s charges will need to improve to revive their hopes as they bid for a third title in four years and second straight after claiming last year’s crown.
