Mamelodi Sundowns Transfers: Brazilian midfielder set to replace Reisinho

Published on by

Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly in advanced talks to sign Esperance Sportive de Tunis midfielder Yan Sasse as they prepare to overhaul their squad for the upcoming season.

The potential arrival of the Brazilian playmaker is linked to the likely departure of Portuguese midfielder Miguel Reisinho, who has struggled for game time since joining the Chloorkop-based club.

Reisinho arrived at the start of the previous season with high expectations, alongside fellow countryman Nuno Santos. However, while Santos established himself as a key player, Reisinho was limited to just 14 appearances. His exit would free up a crucial foreign player slot, paving the way for a new international signing.

Cardoso’s connection accelerating deal

With Reisinho currently negotiating the termination of his contract, Sundowns have turned their attention to Sasse, a player who previously caused them problems on the continental stage. The 29-year-old is now a free agent after his contract with Esperance expired, making him an attractive prospect.

According to iDiski Times, the connection between Sasse and Sundowns is strengthened by the club’s new head coach, Miguel Cardoso. The Portuguese manager previously coached Sasse at Esperance, where the Brazilian was a central figure.

During his time in Tunis, Cardoso witnessed Sasse’s quality firsthand and even masterminded a victory over Sundowns in the 2024 CAF Champions League semi-finals before eventually taking the helm at the South African club.

Now in charge at Sundowns, Cardoso is keen to reunite with a player he knows well. Sasse, who was reportedly hesitant about a move last season, is now believed to be open to joining his former coach in South Africa, despite interest from other clubs in North Africa and the Gulf region.

Securing a proven continental talent on a free transfer would be a shrewd piece of business for Sundowns, aligning with their successful recruitment strategy. For Cardoso, it represents an opportunity to finally land a player whose abilities he deeply trusts.

During his time with the Tunisian giants, Sasse made 104 appearances, scoring 24 goals and providing 13 assists.
