Teboho Mokoena and six other Sundowns stars in danger of suspension

Mamelodi Sundowns star Teboho Mokoena is once again facing a potential suspension, a situation that could significantly impact the team’s push for the league title.

The influential midfielder has already been sidelined twice this season due to disciplinary issues. He first served a one-match ban after accumulating four yellow cards, causing him to miss the league fixture against Orlando Pirates on November 1.

Later, a red card against Siwelele FC in December resulted in a two-game absence, forcing the Bafana Bafana international to sit out matches against Orbit College FC and Sekhukhune United.

Mokoena has since picked up another three cautions, the latest coming in Wednesday’s 2-1 victory over Golden Arrows, a match in which he also scored the opening goal. This brings his current tally to three yellow cards, meaning just one more will trigger another automatic suspension.

According to PSL regulations, this second accumulation of four yellow cards will result in a one-match ban. However, should the 28-year-old receive a third set of four cautions this season, the penalty would escalate to a three-game suspension.

As the season approaches a tense conclusion, the availability of the former SuperSport United player could be a decisive factor in Sundowns’ quest for a ninth consecutive league championship.

The Tshwane giants have several other players walking a similar disciplinary tightrope, with Brayan Leon, Aubrey Modiba, Jayden Adams, Keanu Cupido, Nuno Santos, and Khuliso Mudau all currently on three yellow cards.

Notably, Adams will still carry his three yellow cards after completing a separate two-match ban for the red card he received in Wednesday’s game.
