‘We embarrassed ourselves’ – Chiefs Sporting Director on pain of Soweto Derby defeat

Kaizer Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr admits he is still embarrassed by the Soweto Derby defeat.

Chiefs were put to the sword by Orlando Pirates who thrashed them 3-0 at the FNB Stadium on Saturday, February 28 with first half goals from Tshepang Moremi and Oswin Appollis before Evidence Makgopa completed the rout late in the second.

It was the biggest derby loss for Chiefs in over 25 years and Motaung, who has experienced many derby wins and losses, was left ashamed by the display of the team.

“We have to fully take responsibility. One, I mean you don’t lose against your arch rivals and two, you don’t lose in that manner. That is a fact,” Motaung Jr said on Marawa Sports Worldwide.

Motaung s Jr surprised by ‘flat’ Chiefs

“We have had some very deep soul-searching conversations and sit-downs with the players and coaches with ourselves and staff in general.

“We embarrassed ourselves on that day, in our home in front of hundreds of thousands and also millions at home. It is a fact and I think one of our club legends has put it correctly. We were on the wrong side of history and that is what it was.

“I have never seen us this flat, I have never seen our players approach it that way.”

It was the fifth straight win for Pirates over Chiefs in the league and left them 11 points ahead of Amakhosi but the margin has widened further with the Buccaneers taking it to 14 in midweek.
