The Citizens are aiming higher in 2024-25 after fifth place last campaign
Cape Town City chairman John Comitis feels the club is now ready to win trophies this season given the signings they have made.
Cape Town have been one of the busiest clubs in the transfer market, bringing in 10 players, with Alifeyo Sibusiso Ziba, Haashim Domingo, Prins Tjiueza, Lefa Aphane, Elson Sithole, Fortune Makaringe, Kayden Francis, Kamohelo Mokotjo, Carlos do Carmo and Ntsikelelo Ngqonga.
The club now feels there is enough quality and competition for places in Erick Tinkler’s squad to challenge for trophies in 2024-25.
“We had a bad run last season, 11 games without a win. It’s not always the coach, sometimes it’s the players not having enough competition in order for them to step up,” Comitis told Sports Night Amplified with Andile.
Which trophy can Cape Town City win?
“We have brought in some interesting players into the mix, so the future is bright. Eric and I have a clear plan for what we want to achieve this season, we want to compete for everything.
“Position four or five is not good anymore, we want silverware. Hopefully this year will be the year where we win things.”
While they have brought in 10 already, Comitis says their transfer business is not done with a forward set to arrive soon.
“We have a striker coming from abroad, we will announce him in the next couple of days,” he added.
Comits tells rivals to expect surprises from Citizens
“Given the right players with flare, I think the club can still surprise a lot of people. I would like to see Eric here for years to come, he is part of the club’s DNA.”
The club boss is drawing confidence from their victory against Mamelodi Sundowns at the back end of last season when the Brazilians were on course to ending the campaign unbeaten before the Citizens recorded a 1-0 victory.
“When you beat Sundowns when they are a game away from an invincible league season, people look at the team (City) and say ‘hold on, don’t write this club off’,” said Comitis.
Cape Town City finished fifth in the PSL last season and have started 2024-25 well after beating Sekhukhune United 1-0 to advance to the MTN8 semi-final, where they will face holders Orlando Pirates.
