Why Kaizer Chiefs will remain the MTN8 kings even if Orlando Pirates complete unprecedented treble

Amakhosi may not be participating in this year’s competition but it will take long before they are dislodged

The MTN8 will take centre stage starting this weekend with holders Orlando Pirates facing SuperSport United on Saturday August 3.

Pirates are bidding to become the first team to win the competition three times in a row after their victories in 2023 and 2024.

If they manage the rare feat, it would take their tally to 13 in the competition’s history, making them the second most successful team in the MTN8.

However, that will still not be enough to dislodge bitter rivals Kaizer Chiefs, who are the undisputed kings of the competition.

It will take a long drought before Chiefs are dethroned

Chiefs last won the MTN8 in 2014 but it was the club’s 15th title which will take some time before it is beaten.

Pirates will have to win three more before they can match the Glamour Boys, assuming Nasreddine Nabi’s men do not add onto their tally, while it would take a long drought for Amakhosi before any other team can get close.

This is because Mamelodi Sundowns are the third most successful side on four titles followed by the now defunct duo of Moroka Swallows and Bidvest Wits as well as SuperSport United on three apiece.

Chiefs will not feature in this season’s competition after finishing 10th in the PSL last term but will sit pretty knowing that their status as the MTN8 kings remains unchallenged.

MOST MTN8 TITLES

Kaizer Chiefs – 15

Orlando Pirates – 12

Mamelodi Sundowns – 4

SuperSport United – 3

Moroka Swallows – 3

Bidvest Wits – 3
