The experienced midfielder has been one of the most important players at his club since joining from Usuthu.

Since joining Orlando Pirates from AmaZulu in the 2022/23 mid-season transfer window, Makhehleni Makhaula has been a key player for coach Jose Riveiro.

In his debut season, the 34-year-old defensive midfielder played eight Premier Soccer League games. In the following season, he managed just 13 owing to injuries, but Bucs opted to retain him owing to his crucial role, especially in big games.

The midfielder has now explained how the Spaniard ensures he plays his role effectively, even though he doesn't get enough credit for it.

‘They can shine, but they don't know who stops the opponent'

He argues his teammates get all the credit for scoring, but his role is crucial because it helps in stopping the opponent from scoring.

“For me, the coach is always reminding me that my role is really important,” Makhaula told iDiski Times.

“They can shine and score goals but they don’t know who is stopping the opponents from coming and scoring or who is starting the play to give the Reles [Relebohile Mofokeng] and the Maswanganyis [Patrick Maswanganyi] the ball. I think Coach is always reminding us all ‘The midfielders that’s your role, guys, it’s really important because it is in the heart of the pitch’.

“I don’t normally get credit but I know that the coach is always encouraging me. So, if I get it from the coach and the players then that’s enough for me. One day they will recognise it.”

Makhaula will be needed more this season as Pirates hope to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns for the Premier Soccer League crown. The team is also determined to perform well in the Caf Champions League after getting eliminated in the second preliminary round last season.
