Tshegofatso Mabasa and Kobamelo Kodisang find new home under ex-Kaizer Chiefs coach

Stellenbosch FC have completed the triple signings of Tshegofatso Mabasa, Kobamelo Kodisang and Mosa Lebusa in what is a major statement from the Cape Winelands side.

Mabasa is perhaps the surprise transfer as he has been linked to Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs in recent months but will now play under Gavin Hunt at Stellenbosch, who have agreed a six-month loan deal with Orlando Pirates.

The striker had fallen down the pecking order at Pirates under coach Abdeslam Ouaddou who has preferred Evidence Makgopa and Yanele Mbuthuma ahead of him, leading to frustration over limited gametime for the 28-year-old.

Mabasa has played just nine matches this season, with just three starts, and he has four goals and an assist from that spell.

His numbers in previous seasons were the best among strikers at the club, managing 16 goals last term and 19 in 2023-24 with a total of 50 in 141 games for the Buccaneers, but Ouaddou was not thrilled with his output.

Mabasa will now look to kickstart his career at Stellenbosch, who have also signed Sundowns winger Kodisang on another six-month loan deal.

Kodisang had just returned to Sundowns after his loan stint with Portuguese side AVS Futebol SAD was cut short this month.

The two will link up with Lebusa, who left Sundowns this month as a free agent to join Stellenbosch as Hunt beefs up his squad for the second half of the season.

Stellies are in 14th position on the PSL log and will begin a new era under Hunt, who replaced long-serving coach Steve Barker, after he left for Tanzanian giants Simba last month.
