Tshegofatso Mabasa’s future at Orlando Pirates remains uncertain, but a potential loan move to Stellenbosch FC could be the perfect solution for all parties involved.
The 29-year-old striker has not featured for the Buccaneers since September, and KickOff reported his absence is linked to stalled contract negotiations.
Mabasa’s current deal expires in June, which means he is eligible to sign a pre-contract with any club from this month.
Instead, Stellenbosch FC have entered the picture and according to Kickoff, Stellies have opened formal talks with both Pirates and Mabasa’s camp to secure the player on loan until the end of the season.
“Stellenbosch are interested in signing Tshego [Tshegofatso Mabasa], and there are formal talks. It’s not concrete yet, but they want him on loan until the end of the season so he can get game time. Pirates are not going to let him play because of contract issues, so he might go on loan, and the decision on whether he stays or leaves will be made at the end of the season.”
Why Pirates Are Considering a Loan
Orlando Pirates have recently strengthened their attacking options with the signings of Daniel Msendami and Andre de Jong, signaling that Mabasa is unlikely to feature this season.
With contract talks deadlocked, keeping him on the bench offers little value. A loan move allows Pirates to manage squad depth, avoid dressing-room tension, and potentially boost Mabasa’s market value if he performs well elsewhere.
Why Stellenbosch Want Mabasa
Stellenbosch FC are not only competing in the Betway Premiership but are also in the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup, making squad depth and experience critical.
The club recently lost head coach Steve Barker, who departed for a job in Tanzania, and their lead striker Andre de Jong who joined Pirates. This double blow has left Stellies short of leadership and firepower in attack.
Mabasa’s experience at continental level with Pirates is a major asset. He understands the demands of CAF competitions and has scored in high-pressure games. His physical presence, aerial ability, and proven finishing make him an ideal fit for Stellenbosch’s attacking structure. For a team juggling domestic and continental commitments, adding a seasoned striker on loan is a smart, low-risk move.

What Mabasa Gains
For Mabasa, a loan move offers a lifeline. At 29, he needs regular minutes to maintain form and attract suitors ahead of his contract expiry.
Sitting out the season could harm his career trajectory, while a successful spell at Stellenbosch could put him back in Bafana Bafana contention for the FIFA 2026 World Cup squad.
Strong performances in the Betway Premiership and CAF Confederation Cup would showcase his ability to deliver at the highest level and remind selectors of his value.
