Was Thabo Senong Deported After Signing for Zimbabwe Giants? Here’s the Truth

Published on by

Incoming Highlanders coach Thabo Senong has returned to South Africa to await the processing of his work permit, the club confirmed on Friday, dismissing rumours that he was deported.

Senong, who is set to replace Pieter de Jongh at the Bosso dugout, arrived in Zimbabwe on Monday but had to leave temporarily due to immigration requirements.

Highlanders Respond to Deportation Rumours

In a statement released on Friday evening, Highlanders clarified that Senong’s departure was procedural and not a deportation.

“The club managed to submit the work permit application documents for coach Thabo Senong on Wednesday, 7 January, after receiving the Sport and Recreation Commission cover letter,” the statement read.

“The Immigration Department acknowledged receipt of the application and issued a tracking number.

Today, regional Immigration Office officials advised that, having successfully completed the permit application process, coach Thabo Senong must leave the country immediately to avoid engaging in activities that could jeopardise the application.

The club secured an afternoon flight back to South Africa for him.”

Work Permit Timeline

Immigration officials indicated that the work permit should be processed within one to three weeks. In the meantime, assistant coach Mkhokheli Dube will oversee pre-season preparations.

Senong, a former Lesotho national team coach, is expected to officially take charge once clearance is granted.

Transfer Market Activity

Meanwhile, Highlanders have been busy in the transfer market after surviving relegation in a season they would like to forget. The club has unveiled five new players, although it remains unclear how much influence Senong has had on these signings as he awaits clearance.
