Thabo Senong Appointed Head Coach of 100-Year-Old African Football Giant

Highlanders Football Club, one of Africa’s most storied football institutions, has entered a new era with the appointment of Thabo Senong as head coach.

The Bulawayo-based giants, boasting over 100 years of history, are older than South Africa’s two biggest clubs, Orlando Pirates (founded 1937) and Kaizer Chiefs (founded 1970), making them one of the continent’s true pioneers.

Senong, a respected tactician with experience at the highest levels of the game, brings a wealth of knowledge from his time with the South African Senior National Team, the Under-20 National Team, and the Lesotho Senior Men’s National Team. His achievements include guiding South Africa’s youth sides to continental success, notably winning the COSAFA Under-20 Cup in 2013.

“Coach Senong’s strong background in youth development, tactical organisation, and team building makes him a valuable addition to the Bosso technical team,” the club said in its statement.

Joining him is Mkhokheli Dube, a former Highlanders player and fan favourite, who returns as assistant coach. Dube’s deep understanding of the club’s culture and traditions, combined with his recent work in Zimbabwe’s developmental structures through his club Zebra Revolution, is expected to complement Senong’s modern approach.

The appointments signal Highlanders’ ambition to blend experience and heritage as they aim to reclaim dominance in Zimbabwean football and beyond. With a century of history behind them, Bosso’s faithful will be eager to see how this new technical team shapes the next chapter of the club’s illustrious story.
