‘We’re capable of beating Pyramids’ – Sundowns star

Mamelodi Sundowns star Thapelo Morena is hoping that they have what it takes to beat Pyramids to win the CAF Champions League title.

This trophy has been eluding Mamelodi Sundowns for the past decade as they last won it in 2016, beating Zamalek in the two-legged final.

This is their first final since then, and Pyramids are also aiming for their maiden Champions League trophy in what will be their first final in history.

Morena believes that beating Al Ahly in the semifinals shows they are strong as a team heading into the final.

“That one is a big fish, and we worked very hard to be where we are. It’s been almost nine years of us not being in the final [since Sundowns vs Zamalek final in 2016],” said Morena to iDiski Times.

“We’ve been knocked out in the quarters and the semi-finals, but we are in the final now.

“We are at that point, and why not, because we are confident after playing Al Ahly [in the semi-final] and winning. Going to the final, we are playing against Pyramids, and we know they have a good squad.

“But we are capable of winning the game and lifting the Champions League trophy. Everyone is in the mood to win this trophy.

“I wouldn’t say it is the same stage, but it’s where all the big teams and the top players are going to be participating in the tournament.”

The first leg takes place on Saturday, 24 May at Loftus Versfeld Stadium before the return tie is held on 1 June at 30 June Stadium in Cairo.
