Orlando Pirates reduced the gap between them and Premier Soccer League leaders Mamelodi Sundowns to 12 points, thanks to a laboured 1-0 win over Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.
The lone goal of the match was scored by South Africa international Nkosinathi Sibisi after a well-delivered free-kick by Deon Hotto. However, there have been arguments about the goal, with a section of fans and stakeholders arguing Sibisi and Evidence Makgopa were in an offside position when the ball was delivered.
They argue that the officials, especially the assistant referee, could have done better. However, in his analysis former on SABC's Soccerzone, former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani has delivered his verdict.
Was it a legit goal?
“We see Sibisi scoring a goal. We told you that when the goalkeeper is in control of the ball, he cannot be challenged,” he stated.
“Is this one in control of the ball? Let’s go and see in Polokwane. Let’s see when the ball is played there, you see Sibisi there celebrating a goal. We can show you again that Kambala put these two [Sibisi and Makgopa] in an onside position.
“The ball fell, or the goalkeeper [Brian Bwire] fumbled; we will show it to you. He fumbled; anyone can challenge for that ball. Therefore, Sibisi come and say, ‘Thank You From Heaven’ and then beautiful goal,” Hlungwani concluded.
Polokwane City are still chasing a place in the Caf Competitions next season while the Sea Robbers believe they can still challenge Mamelodi Sundowns for the Premier Soccer League title.
