‘What type of player fits at Kaizer Chiefs’: Muhsin Ertugral

Published on by Nkosiyabuya Sithole

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertuğral has shared his insights on the ideal player profile for the Soweto giants.

The Turkish manager had two tenures with Amakhosi, first from 1999 to 2003 and then returning from 2007 to 2009.

During his time with the Glamour Boys, he achieved notable success. In his initial stint, he secured the BP Top 8, Coca-Cola Cup, Mandela Cup, and the African Cup Winners’ Cup (now known as the CAF Confederation Cup). In his second tenure, he claimed the MTN8 and the Telkom Knockout Cup.

Ertuğral emphasises that due to the intense pressure of wearing the Chiefs jersey, a coach requires players who possess both mental strength and quality to handle such demands. Additionally, these players should prioritise teamwork over individualism.

MUHSIN ERTUGRAL DISCUSSES IDEAL PLAYER PROFILE FOR CHIEFS

“What is a type of player that you need at Kaizer Chiefs?” asked Ertugral in an interview with iDiski Times. “Because the pressure is there every time. You need the quality to sustain the pressure. You need a ball player, you need a structured player, you need a collective player.

“There’s a lot of elements where you need to look into and where are those available in South Africa? And for Kaizer Chiefs to get players like they did now, is that they get certain degree players who has the potential to play for Chiefs.

“But whether this means they’re gonna perform for Kaizer Chiefs, that’s a different story.

“So obviously, what Chiefs have done, the next step was getting [Tera] Maliwa in. He is a scout that is in South Africa, I think one of the best we can say or the best scout here in the country.

“So while they look into building a team and building for the coming years, they are also looking already behind season, already for coming seasons to have the right players, the right elements that they need.

“They will, I’m sure that they go out in the January window to try make corrections. But I’m sure that they will plan already ahead for the next season, and that will make the team [better].

“I expect Kaizer Chiefs next season to be firing from all cylinders, with the right transfers which they specifically need on their positions.”
