Why did Broos go for Titus as Mayambela’s replacement?

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos was forced to replace the injured Mihlali Mayambele with Stellenbosch FC attacker Devin Titus.

The former suffered an injury while turning out for his club Aris Limassol in Cyprus last weekend in the domestic assignment. It was an incident that locked him out of back-to-back Group K's 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Uganda and South Sudan respectively.

Titus has been an integral part of the Stellies team; last season he played 39 games across all competitions and managed to score 12 goals with three assists. The Stellies won the Carling Knockout and finished third in the Premier Soccer League.

This season, Titus has played 17 matches with three goals and two assists.

Coach Broos insists the 24-year-old attacker is a player who can make an impact on the national team.

“I think when you see the performances from Devin with Mayambela injured, I don’t see any player who can replace him. He’s having a strong season, he scores, he’s very quick, and he can dribble defenders,” the 72-year-old stated.

“So yeah, I think we can’t say anything bad about the choice to select Titus, and I hope when I need him, he will help us, but I’m sure he will because he has a certain talent, and that is eliminating players and scoring.”

In the 2023 edition, Bafana Bafana won a Bronze and Broos is hoping this time his team can go all the way to the final.
