Chiefs news as they break

Chiefs legend adamant he is staying put despite SAFA interest

Kaizer Chiefs legend and AmaZulu head coach Arthur Zwane has explained why he cannot easily walk away from the club amid reports he’s a wanted man at SAFA.

Zwane joined Usuthu in October 2024 along with the side’s then DDC coach Vusimuzi Vilakazi. Last season, he helped the club finish inside the top four in the Betway Premiership.

He has also enjoyed a good start to the current campaign currently sitting in third place on the table with 19 points in eight matches, four points from log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

Meanwhile, there have been reports that new Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane wanted him on his technical team. Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the 2026 Carling Knockout Cup last 16 round draw, Zwane explained what it took for him to join the club, how he’s been given freedom and support to do his job.

Zwane added that this is a project he wants to see through as he is also enjoying the challenge it presents.

“I’ve said it more than once that AmaZulu, when they recruited me, they took me away from the team that I was with for 24 years,” said Zwane.

“So, I was like part of the furniture. I felt at home and when I got a call from the President [Sandile Zungu], the first thing I said was President, I’m willing to join, but please, contact chairman [Kaizer Motaung], and if chairman agrees, I’m on board.”

“When he explained what he wanted to achieve and the kind of coach he was looking for that project, I felt I’m that coach, together with Coach Kanu at that time. I felt we’re going to make it big, I think as much as we started very slow, we were shaking, but we grew in stature. We grew with the team, and the President gave us that freedom to grow with the players, to understand the environment as well.

“With the support that we are getting from our supporters and the management, including the board, the CEO look it’s second to none. Hence, it’s not going to be easy decision for me to just say tomorrow I want to move you get what I mean and only time will tell, but trust me, I’m enjoying myself. I’m growing.

“This is a challenge I needed as a coach.”

Da Cruz happy with ‘good draw’

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has termed the Carling Knockout Cup Round of 16 draw against TS Galaxy as a “good draw”.

Amakhosi have already lost out on silverware this campaign after suffering a first-round MTN8 elimination to Golden Arrows extending their failure to capture the Wafa Wafa competition to over a decade having last won it under Stuart Baxter in 2014/15.

“It’s a good draw because we’ll be at home. It was very important to play at home given that it is between our CAF game [CAF Confederation Cup, second preliminary round against Red Arrows of Zambia] and the Soweto Derby [against Orlando Pirates in the Betway Premiership],” he told the club’s website.

“They will be difficult opponents, and we expect a tough game but it’s also not the worst draw we could have got.

“We respect them and will prepare accordingly. We’ll know at the end of the match whether it was a good draw or not. We will only have four days to prepare for it after our home leg in the CAF tie against Red Arrows.

“We have analysis on TS Galaxy, and we will come up with our own game-plan that will hopefully take us through to the next round,” he concluded.

Chiefs get stern warning

Former Kaizer Chiefs head coach Cavin Johnson predicts a difficult match for the Soweto giants against a team eager to prove itself, as Amakhosi prepare to face Red Arrows FC in the second preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup.

Head coach Fernando Da Cruz has warned that the Soweto giants face a stern test, citing difficult pitch conditions, a hostile atmosphere and tactical challenges that could expose Chiefs’ defensive weaknesses. With the Glamour Boys struggling domestically, the first-leg match at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola will test the team’s character.

“Because of the prize money now available in the Confederation Cup and the Champions League, all teams are making a major effort to progress further in the tournaments. With Sundowns at the top of African football, everyone now expects South African teams to be well prepared and to emulate what Sundowns have achieved over the last eight years. There is a great deal at stake,” Johnson told KickOff.

The former Chiefs coach pointed to the decline of traditional Zambian powerhouses as a factor that makes Red Arrows difficult to prepare for — suggesting that a lack of footage could leave Da Cruz’s side vulnerable to the unexpected.

“Zambian football has not been prominent for a long time. Zanaco and Zesco are not as powerful as they once were. Red Arrows are an unknown quantity, unless Chiefs can obtain footage from Zambia to show the team what to expect,” he added.

“Another factor is the hostile environment. Chiefs have a large following across Africa, so their opponents may know more about Chiefs than Chiefs know about Zambia. It will be difficult. It depends on who wants it more,” Johnson concluded.
